al|cayde

al|cayde
al|caide or al|cayde «al KAYD; Spanish ahl KY thay», noun.
1. a commander of a Spanish fortress.
2. a warden of a Spanish prison.
[< Spanish alcaide < Arabic al-qā'id the commander]
Usage Alcaide is sometimes confused with alcalde, with respect to both spelling and meaning, but, unlike alcalde, alcaide is seldom, if ever, used of a person in a country where Spanish (or, less often, Portuguese) is not the dominant language.
